Serre-les-Sapins

Serre -les- Sapins is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Serre -les- Sapins is located on 306 m, about 8 km west of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the gently undulating countryside between the rivers of Doubs in the south and Ognon (north) on a hill northwest of the Bois de Saint -Claude.

The area of ​​5:24 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the north Doubstals. The main part of the territory occupied by the plateau which extends between Doubs and Ognon and is on average 275 m. This plateau comprises the vast forest area of the Bois de Saint -Claude and the adjacent arable and meadow land. It is flanked to the northwest by a ridge that stretches for several kilometers from southwest to northeast. Here the highest elevation of Serre- les- Sapins is achieved with 314 m. To the west, the municipality's area stretches over a valley, which is drained by the Lanterne for Ognon, up to the level of Champvans (310 m).

Neighboring communities of Serre- les- Sapins are Champvans -les -Moulins and Pouilley -les-Vignes in the north, Besancon in the East, Franois the south and Vaux- les- Prés in the West.

History

Is first mentioned in the 12th century Serre. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Serre was officially renamed in 1961 in Serre- les- Sapins.

Attractions

The construction of the three-aisled church of Notre -Dame de la Nativity in classical style was begun in 1771. In the old town several houses in the traditional style of the Franche- Comté are still preserved from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Population

With 1526 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Serre -les- Sapins one of the smaller communities of the department of Doubs. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of ​​210-270 people, a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has more than quintupled. Meanwhile Serre -les- Sapins is one of the urban districts of Besançon.

Economy and infrastructure

Serre -les- Sapins was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village.
