Pirey

Pirey is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Pirey is located at 305 m, about 6 km northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the gently undulating countryside between the rivers of Doubs ( in the south) and Ognon ( in the north) northwest of the Fort of Montboucons.

The area of ​​6.67 km ² municipal area includes a section south of the Ognon. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau which connects north to the Doubs Valley and is on average 290 m. The non- populated area is consisted of arable and meadow land; in the south there is the extensive Grove Bois de la Chaille. Flanked the plateau of Pirey in the southeast of the ridge of the fort of Montboucons, on the 370 m, the highest elevation of Pirey is achieved and which forms the south-eastern border. To the north, the municipality's area extends over the elongated hill of Pirey (350 m ) up to the headwaters of the Lanterne (inflow of Ognon ).

Neighboring communities of Pirey are Miserey - Salines in the north, Ecole-Valentin in the east, in the southeast of Besancon and Pouilley -les -Vignes in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Pirey in 1134 under the name Piré. In the course of time the spelling on Pire ( 1244), Pirei ( 1316), and Pireyo ( 1394) transformed to the present name. In the Middle Ages had several dominations real estate on the territory of Pirey. In 1674 the city under the siege of Besancon was destroyed by the troops of King Louis XIV. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France.

Attractions

The church Saint -Martin was built in 1689 and several times later extensively restored. It has a rich interior, especially the furniture purchased in 1805 from the former Couvent de Consolation.
