The MAINEiacs had a successful time before they were bought out due to financial difficulties after the 2010/11 season for 3.5 million U.S. dollars from the league. For the season 2011/12 the game operation was therefore set and the number of teams in the QMJHL dropped to 17 participants.

At the same time, the league management awarded the vacated license to the City of Sherbrooke. On November 24, 2011 Team President Denis Bourque announced that the franchise will be named Phoenix.
