Shropshire

Shropshire [ ʃɹɒpʃə ] (abbreviated Salop or Salops ) is a ceremonial and traditional county in the West Midlands in England. The county is bordered by the counties of Cheshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and the Welsh counties of Powys and Wrexham. Shropshire was part of the Principality of Powys until the conquest of Powys, but was not incorporated into the present-day Wales. So there the Welsh language is still spoken by many people as a native language in the mountainous west. The border wall, which was built in the 9th century against the Welsh, also leads to Shropshire around.

Besides Herefordshire Shropshire is one of the very agrarian counties. The historic main town is Shrewsbury, the largest town in the county is Telford. In the county, is also Coalbrookdale, from where started the industrial revolution in England, and Ironbridge, the place was built on the The Iron Bridge, the first iron bridge in the world ( hence the name). The abbreviation Salop has been used for centuries in official documents. " Salop " comes from " Salopesbiry ", the former name of the administrative headquarters Shrewsbury.

On 1 April 1998 the District Telford and Wrekin has been administratively removed from Shropshire and raised to a unitary authority. On April 1, 2009, the remaining five Districts Bridgnorth, North Shropshire, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Atcham and South Shropshire have been dissolved and its powers to the Council of Shropshire ( Shropshire Council) transmitted. Since then, there is a ceremonial county of Shropshire from the Shropshire and Telford unitary authorities and Wrekin.

The cradle of European industry

Despite the rural Gepräges Shropshire became the starting point of the Industrial Revolution. Shropshire has many geological layers and contains almost all rock types that exist in Northern Europe. Can be mined coal, lead, copper and iron ore. Another advantage is the river Severn, which provides a natural route for transportation of minerals produced.
