Sissach District

The District Sissach is an administrative unit in the canton of Basel-Country with capital Sissach.

Geography

The District Sissach located in the southeast of Canton. It comprises the south of the Lower Hauenstein Pass on the border with the Canton of Solothurn beginning Ergolztal with its numerous side valleys. To the east and to the north is the district by hills that belong to the Jura mountains and form the transition to the canton of Aargau, limited. Only in the northeast of the valley in the direction of the district of Liestal is open. The District Sissach is relatively sparsely populated and largely dominated by agriculture, forest and hills. Unlike the rest of the canton it consists largely of small and tiny villages.

Neighboring districts

The district is bordered to the north by the district of Rheinfelden in the canton of Aargau and to the east by also lying in the Aargau District Laufen Castle, on the south by the District Gösgen in the Canton of Solothurn, in the southwest of the district of Waldenburg in and to the northwest by the district of Liestal.

Traffic

The district is the railway line leading from Basel to Olten, which overcomes by the Hauenstein base tunnel, the Jura chain, representing one of the two main tributaries of the Gotthard line. West of the new route to the base tunnel runs the old Hauenstein line through the Homburgertal. The latter is now used only with the S9, the Läufelfingerli, for regional services and also serves as an alternate route for breakdowns or congestion in the Hauenstein tunnel.

In parallel with the railway line running the national road and motorway A2 from Basel to Lucerne and the old pass road over the Lower Hauenstein.

Municipalities
