South Bačka District

Južna Bačka (Serbian Јужно - Бачки округ, Yuzhno Backi okrug, Hungarian Dél- Bácskai körzet, Slovak Juhobáčsky okres, Romanian Districtul Backa de Sud) or Southern Bačka is an administrative district in the western part of Vojvodina.

Population

This district has 2011 607.835 inhabitants according to the census. The main administrative center is the city of Novi Sad. The ethnic composition in the district in 2002 was as follows: Serbs ( 69%), Hungarians (9.3%), Slovaks, Croats, Montenegrins, Ruthenians and others. Seven of the 11 municipalities have a Serbian majority, Novi Sad ( 75 % ), title ( 85%), Žabalj ( 86%), Beočin ( 68%), Srbobran ( 67%), Bačka Palanka ( 78%) and Temerin (64 %). A municipality has a Slovak majority: Petrovac with 68%. Three are mixed: Vrbas with 48% and Bac with 46% Serbs and 49% Bečej Magyars.

History

The first Serbian elementary school was founded in 1703 in Bečej. In the 19th century the first canals were built, Great Backa Canal and Little Backa Canal.

Economy

The economic priorities of the district are the chemical, oil, machinery, tools, electrical, porcelain, textile, food and construction industries.
