Surfin ' Safari is the title of the first, released on October 1, 1962 album by the Beach Boys. The recordings lasted from April to September 1962. The album was produced by Nick Venet.

Formation

Murry Wilson, father of Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson, as well as the first manager of the band had, in May 1962 was meeting with Nick Venet, a young producer of Capitol Records agreed. He brought a demo tape with Beach Boys songs to the appointment. Murry Wilson played Venet the pieces before, and he was thrilled. Instant Venet guessed that he had with Surfin 'Safari and 409 a hit single for Capitol at hand. Venet wanted to publish 409 as an A- side, bandleader Brian Wilson called Surfin 'Safari as an A- side. Venet put his head through, but a little later it turned out that Brian Wilson was right, and Capitol replaced the pages. Surfin 'Safari came to number 14 on the Billboard charts and made the Beach Boys to national stars.

On the titles Surfin ', Surfin' Safari, and 409 is still Beach Boys founding member Alan Jardine heard. The rest of the album played a David Lee Marks, a neighbor of the Wilson, Alan Jardine replaced the two years.

Except for the cover versions of Little Girl ( You're My Miss America ), Summertime Blues and Moon Dawg all the tracks were composed by Brian Wilson. Mike Love wrote to Wilson three compositions the text. Gary Usher, who is called on all remaining pieces as co -author, was a friend of Brian Wilson's mid-1960s and made a career as a singer, composer and producer.

During the sessions for the album and the song Land Ahoy, which was released only to the Beach Boys Rarities (1983 ) was born. Capitol Records inserted in the song of the new edition of Surfin ' Safari / Surfin ' USA ( 2001). The song Cherry, Cherry Coupe from the album Little Deuce Coupe is based on the melody of Land Ahoy.

All recordings are in mono.

The album reached number 32 of the U.S. Billboard charts and stayed there for 37 weeks.

Surfin 'Safari was produced by Chuck Britz, who was also involved as a sound engineer at the other shots of the Beach Boys.

County Fair, was written, according to Gary Usher, the co-songwriter within ten minutes.

Little Girl ( You're My Miss America ) was the first song on the Dennis Wilson took over the main vocal. The song was written by Vincent Catalano and Herb Alpert. The first version is from Dante & His Friends.

409 reached the B-side of Surfin 'Safari number 76 in the charts. The song is about a Chevrolet Impala 409, the dream car of Gary Usher. The engine noise in the song, however, comes 348er of Usher's Chevrolet.

Surfin ' appeared already in 1961 on the small record label Candix Records as a single and became a top 5 chart success in California (2nd place). National could reach the song can only accommodate 75. The published version of this album, however, was re-recorded.

Summertime Blues is a well known garage rock classics by Eddie Cochran.

Moon Dawg was written by producer Nick Venet under the pseudonym " Derry Weaver ". The original was published in 1959 by the first surf band The Gamblers. It is unclear whether Derry Weaver, the guitarist of the group, identical with Nick Venet or whether Venet has only used his name.
