Geography
Thannhausen lies in the Danube-Iller region.
There are the following districts: Castle, Thannhausen, Nettershausen.
In Mindel is between Augsburg, Ulm and Memmingen ( at the intersection of B 300 and State Road 2025) on the edge of the Natural Park Augsburg Western Woods and Mindelheim between Burgau and the town Thannhausen. The city is located on the eastern ridge of 500 m above sea level. inst lying Mindel. Of the 60 m high valley slopes is an interesting view of the city and the Mindel.
History
Thannhausen was first documented in the responses of local nobility " of Taginhusen " in the year 1109. Thannhausen in today's region of Swabia was the seat of an Upper and Lower Court of the county of the same name from 1677 of the Counts Sinzendorf, 1708 the Count Stadion. With the Act of Confederation in 1806 the place came to the Kingdom of Bavaria. It had the right market with important self- rights. 1953 Thannhausen received city rights.
Between 1894 and 2001 Thannhausen endpoint was a railway line from Dinkelscherben.
Christoph von Schmid worked from 1796 to 1817 in Thannhausen as Benefiziat and school director.
Incorporations
On 1 January 1977, until then independent municipality castle was incorporated.

The city council has 20 members. After the local elections of 2002, the seats distributed on the following lists:
- CSU: 8 seats
- FWG: 6 seats
- SPD: 6 seats

Since the local elections of March 2, 2008, the distribution of seats:
- CSU: 8 seats
- FW: 8 seats
- SPD: 4 seats
Mayor since May 1st 2008, Georg Schwarz ( CSU / FW), which was previously mayor in Neuburg an der Kammel.
After years of discussion, referendum and citizen dialogue succeeded in 2009, the opening for a new town hall. On the site of the former "Angel Brewery " The new building is realized. In a limited architectural competition with eight architectural firms, the draft Thannhauser architect Peter Schoblocher emerged as the winner.
Twinning
Since 1981, a partnership with the French community in the southern Mortain Manche, Normandy. A large block of granite which was artistically incorporated into the design of the Thannhauser Mortainplatzes, reminiscent of that friendship.
