Tomáš Vokoun

Tomáš Vokoun ( born July 2, 1976 in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech professional ice hockey goaltender who stands since June 2012 with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League contract.

Career

He began his professional career in his homeland with Poldi Kladno. There, the NHL became aware of him and then the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL Entry Draft in 1994 secured the rights to him by pulling him in the ninth round as 226.

In 1995 he moved to North America and first played for the Wheeling Nailers in the East Coast Hockey League and in the AHL for Montreal's farm team, the Fredericton Canadiens. His NHL debut came with the Canadiens in the season 1996 / 97th This game should however remain the only one in the jersey of Kanadiens. After another year in Fredericton gave him the Canadiens from the Nashville Predators.

There he was able to assert itself as a second goalkeeper behind Mike Dunham in the 1998/99 season, but had to pause the following season due to injury. Three years he was the second man behind Dunham before he replaced it in the 2002/03 season was the first goalkeeper.

Internationally, he played at the Junior World Championships in 1996 and the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010 and the World Cup of Hockey 2004 for the Czech national ice hockey team. He was honored for " Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament" in 2005 and won the world championship title with the Czech Republic. In 2010, he won another world championship with the Czechs.

In April 2006 it was announced that Vokoun is suffering from thrombophlebitis in the pelvic area, which is why he was missing in the playoffs. In July, it was explained that Vokoun can continue his career and the beginning of September he signed a four year contract with the Nashville Predators.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season Vokoun brought very good performance and could win eleven of his 16 games at a catch rate of 92 percent. However, in late November, he retired to a ligament in the thumb and fell out a long time. He made ​​his comeback and reached the Predators to the playoffs. On 22 June 2007 he was transferred from the Predators to the Florida Panthers. In exchange, the Predators were given including a first-round draft pick for the NHL Entry Draft in 2008.

On July 2, 2011 Vokoun signed a contract for one year with the Washington Capitals. On June 3, 2012 Vokoun signed a two- year contract worth a total of four million U.S. dollars at the Pittsburgh Penguins after they had acquired in exchange for a seventh -round choice of law in the NHL Entry Draft in 2012 by the Washington Capitals him.
