U.S. Army Regimental System

The Regimental System of the United States Army Engl. United States Army Regimental System ( USARS ) is since 1981 the establishment of the regimental structure in the U.S. Army. Each active soldier in the U.S. Army reservist and the U.S. Army Reserve and Army National Guard is assigned by the system to a regiment or a special corps.

History

In the American Revolution regiments of the individual colonies formed the basis of the Continental Army. After 1783 these were resolved to some border posts, because they wanted to avoid a strong central army. The regiment at this time was the basic organizational element of the U.S. Army as all armies worldwide. The support troops who did not belong to a regiment were organized into corps. For example, in 1775 formed United States Army Corps of Engineers. These were divided into brigades or detachments.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, this organization remained virtually unchanged. In addition to the regiments of the Regular Army yet existed regiments of the individual state militias, such as the 14th New York Infantry Regiment. With the founding of the United States National Guard, the system was changed. The regiments experienced a continuous numbering. New troops genres such as armored force or army aviation regiments and had no organized into battalions.

After the Korean War, the organization of the Division was changed. They wanted to adapt the rigid system of infantry regiment to the realities of the atomic battlefield. This should include smaller and more mobile combat groups replace the regiment. However, to obtain the relationship of the soldier to the regiment and continue the story of the regiments, was introduced in 1957, the Combat Arms Regimental System ( CARS). The CARS included the branches of infantry, artillery, air defense, anti-tank troops and cavalry. The remaining battalions were assigned to so-called parent regiments. A parent regiment has neither a commander nor a staff, but serves to bond the soldiers to a single regiment and the continuation of the tradition.

An extension set of 1981 the United States Army Regimental System ( USARS ) represents the German Army were included in the regimental system and the corps support troops were set equal to a regiment. In addition, the training units of the schools in the U.S. Army were also assigned to regiments.

In the course of transformation for several years there will be a reclassification and thus activation or inactivation of various regiments, so that the Army Regulation regiments mentioned have already been changed.
