UEFA Euro 1984
The final round of the 7th European Football Championship was held in France from 12 to 27 June 1984.
Since this championship in 1984, third place is no longer played; also a semi-final of the two group winners and runners- will be played back. France qualified automatically as hosts.

For the alignment of the 1984 European Championship, France, Germany, England and Greece interested.
As favorites Germany were ( had tried already in the previous two EMs to an alignment ) and France. The main reason why the UEFA opted for France, was that the country in case the alignment would have a chance to expand its outdated stages by grants from the state and to build new ones.
This decision was widely criticized. Karl -Heinz Heimann, a columnist for the trade magazine Kicker, described the decision as " development aid for the French football " as well as "an affront to the German football ".
The qualification of the German teams
Germany and Austria
The crew of the Federal Republic of Germany met in the group Six in Austria, Northern Ireland, Turkey and Albania. The Austrians made a good start in the qualification, in contrast to the German team. Their defeat in the first match against Northern Ireland 0-1 followed by a tight 2-1 win in Albania. So the return match in Gelsenkirchen between Germany and Austria should be a vorentscheidenen game ( first leg 0-0). The German team started very punchy and has already led after 4 minutes by Karl -Heinz Rummenigge 1-0. Rudi Völler increased after 19 and 21 minutes to 3-0. So the game was decided quickly. The German team placed themselves still under pressure, as they lost against Northern Ireland in Hamburg a second time with 0:1. The shock was deep, after Albania was gone in 23 minutes in Saarbrücken in the lead. Although Rummenigge has already offset a minute later, but the team was very confused and ran again at risk of running into counterattack. Only in the 80th minute rescued Cologne's defender Gerhard Strack with a header in a 2-1 victory, the German fans.
East Germany and Switzerland
The crew of the GDR played in the Group One against Switzerland, Belgium and Scotland. The Belgians dominated the group and the GDR as Switzerland did not have the slightest chance to qualify for the tournament in France.

Group 1
Was hosts France to Michel Platini as a big favorite. With the Football World Cup 1982 in Spain, the French were still unhappy in the semifinals - after penalties - failed to Germany. Now, the team of coach Michel Hidalgo wanted to get the first title. In the opening game, the team met the Sensation team qualifying, Denmark (it had England with a 1-0 victory at Wembley off) under the German coach Josef Piontek and did surprisingly difficult. Bad luck for the former Moenchengladbach Allan Simonsen on the part of the Danes. He broke in the first half, the leg and the tournament was over so for him. Platini managed in 78 minutes then finally, the ransom for the French fans at the Parc des Princes stadium with his goal to make it 1-0. The young left-back Manuel Amoros was still sent off just before the end. French and Danes showed exciting attacking football in the other group course.
It delivered on the last day of group matches - France had already qualified as first team for the semi-finals - Danes and Belgians in the deciding game a thrilling duel for second place. Although it was the Belgian team take the lead, 2-0, but then the Danes had nothing to oppose more and lost by Preben Larsen Elkjær decisive goal with 2:3.

Germany disappointed in the first group game against Portugal excessive and could not get a game-changing scenes in a boring opening match. Against Romania won the German team by two goals from Rudi Völler. In Romania played in the first half, the only 19 -year-old Gheorghe Hagi. This success was Germany against Spain before the last group match advantage. A draw would have been enough to advance into the semifinals. The Germans had several chances to take the lead. The first semi-final was the most dramatic game of this championship. The surprise team Denmark also inspired in this game, the European football fans. But Spain was very well cast on the defensive and countered. Even after the 1-0 lead the Danes in the 7th minute by Søren Lerby they remained a constant threat due to rapid counterattack and came in the 67th minute through Maceda to compensate. After goalless extension it came to the penalty drama with a tragic end for the Danes: Preben Larsen Elkjær missed his kick and Spain reached the finals.
Final
France was first surprised in this game, by the very aggressive tactic of the Spaniards. Spain was one of the first opportunities. Striker Santillana, the veteran star of Real Madrid, led the Spanish team. In the second half, when the French fans were already worried, led a fatal mistake from Spain goalkeeper Luis Arconada France's leadership. A direct free kick from Michel Platini Arconada let slip through your hands and in the slow- pace the ball rolled over the line. The 1-0 lead for France opened with even stronger offensive efforts of the Spaniards now counterattack chances for the French, however, had her central defender Yvon Le Roux in the 86th minute red card. In the 90th minute, then decided such a counterattack with left winger Bruno Bellone the Paris final. France won so his first major title.
