Unije

Unije ( dt: Niä ) is an island in the Adriatic. It is located west of the island of Lošinj and south of Istria in the Kvarner Bay and belongs to Croatia.

Geography

Unije is a gently hilly island, the area is 16.8 km ². The length of the coastline is about 37 km. The island is composed of limestone and is mostly covered with the typical local vegetation. To the east of the island there are some deeply cut bays, the largest of the Bay Maracol, a popular place for sailors.

Settlement history and culture

The only settlement on the island is the same place Unije, which is located in a bay on the west coast, with about 50 permanent residents and a few hundred holidaymakers during the summer time. There are several restaurants, a grocery store, post office and tourist information center. The island is accessible free of cars and a catamaran from Rijeka, Cres and Mali Losinj and a passenger ship from Mali Lošinj from. On the island there is a small airfield with unpaved runway. The inhabitants of the island live primarily on tourism and fishing. Agriculture has a subordinate role, primarily for their own use.
