Vele Srakane

The islands of times and Vele Srakane [ srakanɛ ] ( German outdated: Small and Large Kanidol ) are two small but inhabited islands of the Adriatic. Male Srakane is located at 44 ° 34 ' north latitude 14 ° 20' ö L. and northeast of it Vele Srakane, which is located at 44 ° 34 ' north latitude 14 ° 19' ö L., both thus south of the Unije and west of the island of Lošinj, are part of the Kvarner bay and belong to Croatia.

Geography

Both islands are characterized by gently undulating character, the area of ​​the larger of the two islands ( Vele Srakane ) is 1.2 km ², the smaller the less than 1 km ². The two islands are separated by a narrow channel about 70 meters wide. The islands consist of limestone, partly overlain by sandy clay. They have, despite their small size, depending on the substrate (limestone or clay ) and the exposure of the situation very different growth on ( scrub, reeds or open grassland ). South of the island of Male Srakane there is an underwater cave, called " Cathedral ", a popular diving area.

Settlement history and culture

On both islands there is ever a settlement that bears the same name as the island. The traces of settlement on Vele Srakane date back to the early history. Most residents now live only in summer on the islands and spend the winter on the mainland. Both islands are car-free. Only in Vele Srakane there is a dock for larger boats and thus a connection by ferry from Mali Lošinj. The inhabitants of the island live primarily on fishing and agriculture for their own use.
