Vila Nova de Foz Côa is a city ( Cidade ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal, with 3,200 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011). The place is particularly important for the local archaeological finds and rock carvings known to the world cultural heritage of UNESCO since 1998. He is also set in the wine growing region of Alto Douro, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

Since prehistoric times, man settled in the valley of Côa, which opens here in the Douro. Therefore, the name of the place derives from (Eng. about: Neustadt an der Côa estuary ).

Located in the strategically important border country, city rights ( Foral ) was the place for the first time in 1299 by King D.Dinis. The place was in the Revolution of 1383 on the part of Castile, and consequently lost more and more privileges and attention. In the meantime adopted resolution of its independent circuit was, however, not complete. 1514 city rights were renewed by King Manuel I..

In the course of the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the subsequent civil war the city was the scene of frequent unrest.

Vila Nova de Foz Côa became a town ( Cidade ) in 1997, and in 1998 its numerous archaeological excavations and archaeological sites of prehistoric rock paintings have been included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Beginning of 2013, the city was honored by the World Health Organization as are senior friendly.

Attractions

Nearby is the registered World Heritage Archaeological Parque do Vale do Côa one of the most important archaeological parks in the country. This topic is also dedicated to the MAAVC - Museo de Arte e Archeology do Vale do Côa.

In the district are a variety religious buildings, stately homes, historic public buildings and stone fountains conservation area, such as a first church of the 13th century goes back, redesigned in the 16th century and extended Manueline - baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Vila Nova de Foz Côa (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pranto ).
