History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement to the Castro culture. The following Romans won in town is home to mines of gold and silver, also parts of Roman roads can still be found. The Romans were followed Vandals, Suevi, Visigoths and other Germanic tribes. After the conquest of large parts of the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors from the early 8th century Penedono remained Arabic, to the Christian King Ferdinand I (León ) conquered the city in the 11th century.

The present town was first officially mentioned in the year 960, as Pena de dono. First City rights were granted place in 1195, which confirmed in 1217, and were renewed in the course of administrative reform of King Manuel I in the year 1512.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the town include several fountains, historic houses and public buildings, including the theater and event center, Cine Forum em Penedono and historic town hall and jail ( Paços do concelho e cadeia Comarca de Penedono ), which today houses the Municipal Library ( Biblioteca Municipal ) and the Tourist Office ( Turismo ) are located. These also include a number of religious buildings, such as the main Baroque church Igreja Matriz de Penedono (also Igreja de São Pedro) from the 17th century.

The historical town center as a whole is a listed building.

The Anta Nossa Senhora do Monte (also Senhora do Monte) lies on a plateau with six other megalithic sites, near the street Penedono to Paredes da Beira.
