Penalva do Castelo is a small town ( Vila ) and a circle ( concelho ) in Portugal with 8001 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).
History
Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement. Celtic Lusitanians lived here. They were conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. From 711, the Moors conquered this area too in the course of their conquest.
In the 12th century were D.Teresa and her son, who later became the first king of Portugal D.Afonso Henriques, build a first monastery here. After the independence of Portugal Afonso Henriques gave the place in 1102 for the first time a city.
King Manuel I renewed the city rights 1514. Having the City so far Castanedo said he was renamed Penalva do Castelo 1957.
