Geographical location

Wernberg is located about 30 km west of the border with the Czech Republic, in the central Upper Palatinate Forest.

History

The district Wernberg was first documented in 1280 on the sale of the castle at the Konrad Paul Strand. However, by the discovery of a copper coin in the well of the castle from the time of Ptolemy VII ( 221-247 AD) is every indication that the Romans no later than the third century AD, a Limes advanced observation and border posts on the " Werder " have built. The place Wernberg evolved over time under the same castle at the junction of the old postal, military and trade route Nuremberg-Prague and Regensburg Eger (now crossing A6 / A93 ). Origin of the name

The names " Oberköblitz and Unterköblitz " are of Slavic origin and indicate Slavic settlements. The earliest documentary reference is found in 1277 in the name of " Koblitz ", then in 1279 as " Chobolst ", 1280 as " Coeblitz " in 1324 as a parish Chöblitz and 1438 as Oberköblitz. The castle Wernberg, the namesakes of the district Wernberg is guided in old documents under different names, such as " Are mountain " or " Wernberch " which means: the castle at Werder.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1974, the formerly independent communities Oberköblitz and Wernberg were incorporated into the new market Wernberg. On January 1, introduced in 1978, parts of the disbanded community Saltendorf added. On 1 May 1978, the majority of the dissolved municipality Glaubendorf followed.
