History

Oberviechtach in Nordgau ( Bavaria ) was about 1130 mentioned for the first time in a document. 1337 received it as a " Viechtach " market rights. In the Hussite Wars, the city was destroyed twice, in 1420 and again in 1432. 1580 was mentioned as part of a country's visitation for the first time a school with a negative judgment. The place belonged to Rentamt Amberg and the district court Murach in the Electorate of Bavaria.

In the course of administrative reform in the Kingdom of Bavaria was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community. In 1913 a railway line from Nabburg about Oberviechtach after Schoensee was completed. 1952 Oberviechtach is charged to the city and in 1961 a garrison town by the advent of the mechanized infantry battalion 122

Until the local government reform in Bavaria from 1 July 1972 the city was the seat of the district Oberviechtach ( license plate " OVI "). With the district reform, the city lost the district administration and other important offices. The county was Oberviechtach with about 15,000 inhabitants, the smallest and one of the districts of Bavaria with low incomes. On 1 July 1972 he was disbanded in the course of municipal reform in Bavaria and summarized together with the former counties Burglengenfeld, Nabburg and nine vorm Wald, as well as the hitherto independent city in the district of Schwandorf Schwandorf.

Incorporations

In 1946, the formerly independent communities Eigelsberg and yard as well as parts of the disbanded community Nunzenried were incorporated. On January 1, 1972 Lind and Obermurach were added. 1 July 1972, followed Pullenried and Wildeppenried with the 1945 or 1946 incorporated territory parts of Pirkhof. On 1 July 1976, added Langau.

Its predecessor was Wilfried Neuber ( also non-party group of voters ), who was in office since 1989.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Oberviechtach shows on silver background a green rooted spruce, standing on green meadow land. The central element, the spruce, should point to the spruce forests that are located around Oberviechtach and gave the city its name (upper Viecht - ah ).

9-11 WTC Memorial Oberviechtach

On 8 October 2011, a memorial to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York City was unveiled in Oberviechtach. It consists of the Artifact # H- 0031a, a 650 -pound piece of steel beam from the remains of the destroyed Twin Towers. This piece of steel is situated on a block of granite Upper Palatinate. Before that is a replica of the twin towers of glass. At the dedication of the memorial government President Brigitta Brunner gave a speech from the Bavarian state government. She said that this monument for the rejection of any ideological radicalism and political extremism stands and is a commitment to social tolerance and social cultural diversity.

Already the opening ceremony of the monument was disturbed by neo-Nazis. They called in the sequence more or less openly to blow up the monument on. These processes, that the message of the memorial was very well understood.

Music

Founded in 1963 Kolping marching band took part in the 2007 and 2008 German Orchestra Competition.

In the city there is a town chapel, which was refounded in 1988 on the initiative of the city council Ludwig Berger. In 2007 the orchestra took part with more than 40 musicians on the traditional Steuben Parade in New York City.

Regular events

Listed annually on the marketplace the Doctor Eisenbarth festival, in which the history of born Oberviechtach Johann Andreas Eisenbarth is told.

Economy and infrastructure

The town is nationally recognized resort. In the Middle Ages and the early modern gold mining was carried out in Oberviechtach.

Traffic

By Oberviechtach the highway passes 22 ( " Ostmarkstraße "). The nearest motorway junction ( A93 ) in Nabburg is about 20 km away. Also in Nabburg is the nearest railway station on the route from Regensburg to court.

Until 1976, passenger trains lead by Nabburg after Oberviechtach and on to Schoensee. 1995, the freight was discontinued; the railway line is a hiking and biking trail today.

Public institutions

Oberviechtach is the seat of the administrative community Oberviechtach, which emerged from the former county Oberviechtach. The community includes the surrounding communities Gleiritsch, Niedermurach, Teunz and Winklarn (Oberpfalz ), which together have a population around 5500 (as at 31 December 2003) and is the seat of a district court.

In Oberviechtach located since 1961 significant for the city location of the armored infantry battalion of 122 Bundeswehr, where Oberviechtach 2002 was the seat of the location management for the district and the district of Cham Schwandorf with 5000 soldiers and 700 civilian employees until December 31.

Education

Oberviechtach has one of the region centrally located school, which places Castle High School, a primary school, a middle school with M- train and all-day care, the Doctor Eisenbarth school ( Oberviechtach ), a special school and a state-accredited vocational school.

Sport and Leisure

Oberviechtach has several tennis courts, a multipurpose hall, a multi- gym and an outdoor pool. The TSV Oberviechtach eV operates on its premises a soccer field and a archery area. The city and some districts have children's playgrounds.
