Xavier Malisse

Xavier Malisse ( born July 19, 1980 in Kortrijk ) is a former Belgian tennis player.

Career

His most successful season was in 2002 when he made the first Belgian to make it into the top 25 in the world rankings and also since Paul de Borman 1904 reached the first Belgian semi-final of Wimbledon. On the way, he defeated, among others, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Greg Rusedski and Richard Krajicek. In the semifinals he was beaten in five sets against Argentina's David Nalbandian.

In 2004, Malisse won the ATP tournament in Delray Beach. Furthermore, he stood at 7 more tournaments in the final. He also won in the same year, together with his compatriot Olivier Rochus the doubles competition of the French Open.

In 2007, he won the tournament in Chennai, he defeated Stefan Koubek in the final and turned in the tournament favorite Rafael Nadal from the high. Shortly after Malisse won as in 2004, the finals of Delray Beach, by defeating the one to set James Blake. End of 2009, Malisse and Yanina Wickmayer his compatriot were blocked by the Belgian Tennis Federation for a year, as they were repeatedly failed to appear for doping controls. The ban was lifted again by the international federation and Malisse 2010 was playing on the tour. In the summer, he scored his best results in the short grass season ( Queens quarterfinals, semifinals and third round of Wimbledon S'Hertogenbosch ) and could be in the rankings after a long dry spell significantly improve.

In January 2011, Malisse reached in Chennai for the first time in nearly four years, an ATP final, but was defeated in three sets by Stanislas Wawrinka. At the Australian Open he reached the third round, where he smoothly in three sets failed to Roger Federer. After a few Erstrundenniederlagen Malisse won in Indian Wells again the third round and failed there Somdev Devvarman on Indians. However, he was on the side of Alexander Dolgopolov, with whom he played for the first time together, win the double competition of the Masters tournament, in the final they beat the Swiss duo Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka. This is Malisses first title ( both single and double ) for four years.

Between 1998 and 2011 he completed 15 matches for the Belgian Davis Cup team. He won 12 of his total of 20 singles matches, while he remained winless in all four double inserts.

As part of the U.S. Open 2013 Xavier Malisse announced his resignation after the Australian Open 2014. After his Erstrundenaus the Challenger tournament in Mons in October 2013, however, he gave his immediate career end known.
