The Yamaha MT -03 is an undisguised motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Yamaha. A concept study was later presented at the Milan EICMA motorcycle show in the fall of 2003 and a year the retail version at the show in Paris. The Naked Bike came in early 2006 in a adapted to the series production version of the single-cylinder sport bike on the market. Known as the ' Sport Roadster ' marketed Funbike resembles in some design elements of the 2005 published MT -01. The bike was fully assembled by the company Belgarda Yamaha Lake Garda. For the model year 2014, the MT -03 was removed from the program because Yamaha on new " MT " models concentrates (MT -09, MT -07).

Method of construction

The MT -03 is driven by the same single-cylinder engine as the Enduro Yamaha XT 660 R and the travel Enduro Yamaha XT 660 Z Ténéré. The four-stroke engine of the motor manufacturer Minarelli produces a nominal output of 35.3 kW ( 48 hp) at an engine speed of 6,000 rpm. The maximum torque of 56.2 Nm at 5.250/min. The engine's power was increased by an enlarged Airboxvolumen and a revised map of the injection system at low and medium engine speeds.

Has the ceramic coated aluminum cylinder bore of Ø 100 mm in diameter, forged pistons a stroke of 84 mm and a compression ratio of 10:1. The compact cylinder head has a chain driven, roller bearings, single overhead camshaft ( SOHC), which controls two intake and two exhaust valves via roller rocker forked. The slightly inclined forward four-stroke engine has an electronic fuel injection with transistor ignition. A balancer shaft reduces vibration.

Full tank, the motorcycle without special accessories with about 192 kg a comparatively high for this performance class weight. Top speed is the manufacturer about 160 km / h.

Landing gear

The exhaust gases of the engine equipped with an injection system will be rendered by an uncontrolled catalytic converter in combination with a secondary air system. The power is transmitted via a five-speed transmission and - in contrast to concept study, which still had a belt drive - a chain drive. The brakes (front dual lens with 298 mm and rear Single disc with 245 mm diameter ) comes from the Yamaha FZ6 and is considered a very reliable and effective. The overall gear ratio ( gear ratio 2.500 / 1.625 / 1.150 / 0.909 / 0.769, 2.080 Primary transmission, final drive ratio 3.130 ) is shorter than that of the XT660, which allows higher acceleration values . The bike has compact dimensions, with a wheelbase of 1,420 mm and is in conjunction with the short spring travel of 130 mm front and 120 mm rear very handy with a penchant for nervousness. The moderate tire sizes (front 120/70 ZR17 M / C 58H, rear 160/60 ZR17 M / C 69H ) allow a neutral steering and cornering behavior. The fork is also identical with the FZ6, the rear wheel is guided in a cast aluminum swingarm. The rear, hinged on a lever and side-mounted, strut comes from suppliers Sachs

The riding position on the 805 mm high for the driver seat is upright, close to the bar and is comparable to a supermoto. The slight increase in passenger seat is not suitable for longer trips for two. The tachometer is designed as analog round gauge, speedometer with odometer as a digital liquid crystal display. The fuel tank holds 15 liters, the manufacturer recommends the use of premium gasoline.

Market positioning

At the launch in 2006, the list price was 6,695 Euros including ancillary costs. Direct competitors for the MT- 03 with comparable performance and suspension geometry include the Derbi Mulhacen 659, the Aprilia Pegaso Factory - both equipped with the same engine as in the MT -03 -, the BMW G 650 Xmoto, but also significantly powerful KTM Duke. Within this competition for the MT -03 asking price was traditionally located towards the lower end. But since model year 2012, the list price for the ( technically unchanged ) MT- 03 with 7,250 Euro is the same as for the further uprated and better equipped KTM Duke.

"So much attention as the mighty MT -01 is not energized the small MT -03 though, but the resemblance is clear. Style Distinctive design elements like the two upraised muffler come from the MT- concept, the visual emphasis of the center recalls. However, the shrunken »Engine Mountains " seems far less impressive: The MT -03 has a plain cylinder ".

" When dashing curve wagging the little Yamaha makes after a short habituation a great figure; with the double disc front and the incredibly stable ride through the curves arises immediately a sense of security. With an important caveat: For drivers over 1.85 meters size, the geometry of the tank, seat, footrests and handlebars will not fit; the popliteal angle is chosen too small and quickly tiring. "
