Yuzhnouralsk

Juschnouralsk (Russian Южноуральск ) is a city in Chelyabinsk Oblast (Russia) with 37 877 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Southern Urals about 90 km south of Chelyabinsk Oblasthauptstadt at the pent-up here Uwelka, a left tributary of the Ui in the river system of the Ob.

Juschnouralsk the Oblast is administratively subordinated directly.

The town lies on the railway line Chelyabinsk - Troitsk Orsk - or - Qostanai ( Nischneuwelskaja station, 7 km east of the city center ) and the M36 highway Ekaterinburg - Troitsk - Kazakh border.

History

A settlement on the territory of the present town was founded in 1745, was called in 1749 Nishne - Uwelskaja and was from 1844 Staniza the Third Troizker Department of Orenburg Cossacks.

The present city was built in 1948 in connection with the establishment of the South Urals thermal power plant (Russian Juschnouralskaja GRES ). 1950 was the place under the name of south ural - Russian for Southern Urals ( settlement ) - the status of an urban-type settlement and on 1 February 1963 in the present form of the name of a town.
