Zelenogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Krai

Zelenogorsk (Russian Зеленогорск ) is a closed town with 66 056 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia. It is located 103 km east of the regional capital of Krasnoyarsk on the banks of the river Kan. The nearest towns are Saosjorny ( 16 km southeast ), Borodino (29 km southeast) and Uyar (35 km southwest).

History

At the site of the present city Zelenogorsk existed before the city's founding, the village called Ust- Barga ( Усть - Барга ), which was known by a resident small iron foundry since 1735.

In the 1950s, the Soviet Ministry of Atomic Energy decided to erect in the spatially far from the European part of the country Krasnoyarsk region operated a facility for uranium enrichment for nuclear weapons. For this purpose, a new city was built from the year 1956 within a relatively short time, which remained closed due to the usual secrecy of Soviet and Russian nuclear industry from the beginning to the public. As a founding date of the city is July 18, 1956, when it was started here with the construction of the first house. First, the city bore the code name Saosjorny -13, later it was changed in Krasnoyarsk -45.

The uranium enrichment plant, which received the name electrochemistry plant was taken into operation in 1962. The city was built by essentially the characteristic of the Soviet Union, the post-war urban development patterns and therefore consists mostly of multi-storey prefabricated buildings and large industrial complexes.

The name of Krasnoyarsk -45 was the city until 1994, when she (literally as " city of green mountains ," an on the territory of the former Soviet Union widespread toponym ) renamed Zelenogorsk. To date, Zelenogorsk one of Russia's closed places and can only be accessed with a special permit.

Economy and Transport

Main operation of the city is the electrochemistry work, which today produces not only nuclear weapons technology and consumer goods such as televisions, monitors, power meters or plastic products. Another important operation in Zelenogorsk is the CHP Krasnojarskaja GRES -2.

The main transport links between Zelenogorsk and other cities pass over the nearby town Saosjorny where there are, among others, a station on the Trans -Siberian Railway. There in the house is close to the highway M53.
