Žigmund Pálffy

Žigmund Palffy ( born May 5, 1972 in Skalica, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak professional ice hockey player who was active for the New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League as well as the HK 36 Skalica in the Slovak Extraliga.

Career

Before Palffy came into the National Hockey League, he played in his homeland for the AC Nitra and HC Dukla Trenčín. On 9 June 1991, he was selected by the New York Islanders in the second round as the 26th overall player in the NHL Entry Draft in 1991. After eight years on Long Iceland Palffy changed on 19 June 1999 along with Bryan Smolinski, Marcel Cousineau and a goalkeeper Fourth round draft law in the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 to the Los Angeles Kings; in return got the Islanders Olli Jokinen center, winger Josh Green, Mathieu Biron defender and a first-round draft pick. With the Kings, he remained until the Lockout 2004/05.

He signed on August 6, 2005 a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins over 13.5 million U.S. dollars. On 18 January 2006 Žigmund Palffy ended due to a lengthy shoulder injury that plagued him since the 03/ 04 season, surprising his career. Only in the summer of 2007, he announced his comeback and signed a contract with the Slovak first division HK 36 Skalica. When HK 36 he quickly developed into a leading player and put both in the season 2007/ 08 and in the following season records for most points in the Extraliga on. He also reached Skalica 2009 the most successful club history: reaching the playoff final.

During the 2010/11 season he paused again from Hockey until he returned as captain for HK 36 in 2011 and top scorer of the Extraliga main round was. In the following two years he was game to continue the service providers of the team and was on Team Captain before he finally finished in July 2013 his career.

Internationally

Palffy completed a variety of appearances for the Slovakia and the former Czechoslovakia, and won the gold medal with Slovakia at the World Cup 2002.
