Zurrieq (or: Iż - Zurrieq ) is one of the oldest towns in Malta, and has 10,090 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2010). In 1436 it became a separate parish, dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria.

Zurrieq is located in the south-eastern part of Malta. It is part of the 5th district, and elections to the Local Council ( City Council ) are every 3 years. The city council consists of 7 members; one of them is the mayor. Currently, Ignatius Farrugia Mayor of Zurrieq.

A well-known landmark in Zurrieq is the Blue Grotto ( Il- Hnejja ), which are known for their clear waters and interesting caves. Similarly, the windmill of Xarolla is a tourist destination. The recently excavated catacombs near the windmill, adjacent to the village of Safi, you can visit. The Feast of the Patron Saint Catherine of Alexandria is the most important festival in Zurrieq and one of the finest in Malta. Because of its wonderful fireworks and also because of the beautiful statue on the first Sunday in September, held festival is known. The second most important festival that of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is celebrated on the first Sunday after the 16th of July.
