Prose
- January 8: The last part of the written by Gaston Leroux Le Fantôme de l' serialized novel Opéra ( The Phantom of the Opera ) appears in the newspaper Le Gaulois.
- Karl May's last completed novel Winnetou IV appears. The author processed therein his trip to America in 1908 and simultaneously sets an end to the adventures of Old Shatterhand in North America.
- Rainer Maria Rilke completed in Leipzig, his only novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, which he began in 1904 in Rome. The work consists of 72 records, which often resemble prose poems and follow mostly unconnected to each other, and is itself always referred to by Rilke " prose book" and never " Roman".
- Hermann Bahr publishes the novel O man.
- The novel Gertrude by Hermann Hesse appears in its final form.
- The Fool in Christ, Emanuel Quint, the first novel by Gerhart Hauptmann, appears in Berlin.
- Thomas Mann begins work on his novel Confessions of Felix Krull.
Poetry
- The collections of poetry Palmström and contemplation by Christian Morgenstern appear in Berlin publishing house of Bruno Cassirer.
- The song collection Gitanjali ( Sangesopfer ) appears next to other works of Rabindranath Tagore in Calcutta. You will contribute to the author in 1913 as the first non-European Nobel Prize for Literature.
- Börries Baron Munchausen written the ballad of Nettle.

- March 3: The Expressionist periodical Der Sturm, weekly for Culture and the Arts, edited by Herwarth Walden, appears for the first time.
- The literary magazine Hyperion by Carl Sternberg and Franz Blei provides after two years their appearance.
Scientific works
- The German physician Magnus Hirschfeld coined the term transvestism.
Awards
- The German Paul Heyse receives " as a tribute proof of the completed and stamped by an ideal conception artistry, which he put to the day during a long and distinguished efficacy as a poet, dramatist, novelist and poet of world famous short stories ," the Nobel Prize for Literature.
