Background
During the three weeks that elapsed between the Canadian Grand Prix and the ninth world championship race of the year in Zandvoort, Didier Pironi survived an accident while testing at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet with minor injuries.
The Team Lotus announced the test driver and Grand Prix debutant Roberto Moreno as a replacement for the injured Nigel Mansell to the Dutch Grand Prix. Jan Lammers returned in time for his home race back into the team Theodore Racing. Also present was again the Toleman team with a now significantly modified cars.
Patrick Tambay, the firm was the successor of the fatally injured Gilles Villeneuve for several weeks, completed this weekend, his first race for Ferrari. The place of the also fatally injured Riccardo palletizing at Osella, however, was not filled for the remainder of the season.
For the first time since the Grand Prix of Belgium piloted by Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese again both works driver Brabham BT50 with the BMW turbo engine.
Training
The two Renault driver René Arnoux and Alain Prost qualified for the front row in front of Nelson Piquet in a Brabham and Didier Pironi at Ferrari 126C2. Niki Lauda shared the third row with Patrick Tambay. Keke Rosberg followed before the two Alfa Romeo by Bruno Giacomelli and Andrea de Cesaris.
Ligier entered the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix back on the problematic driving JS19. Eddie Cheever failed to acquire skills and Jacques Laffite hand for the race yet again to the mature JS17B back.
Race
First Prost went before Arnoux, Pironi, Lauda, Piquet and Tambay lead. While Pironi in the second round filed past Arnoux, Piquet overtook both Tambay and Lauda and thus took the fourth place.
In the fifth round Pironi took the lead from Prost. On lap 15 Piquet got to Arnoux passed on to third place, followed by Rosberg, who had previously overtaken Tambay and Lauda and in the 22nd round of Arnoux benefited failure. The Frenchman failed because of a solute front wheel into the tire secured with stacking distance limitation of Tarzan. Although its monocoque broke, he was uninjured.
In the 30th round Prost lost his second place at Piquet and retired three laps later convicted of an engine failure. This was ultimately Rosberg third ahead of Lauda and Derek Daly and Mauro Baldi.
Although he had already been eliminated in round 15, Derek Warwick had graduated in the modified Toleman for the first time in his career the fastest lap of a Grand Prix.
