1989 African Championships in Athletics

The 6th European Athletics Championships were held from Africa 4 to 8 August 1989 at the Lagos National Stadium in the former Nigerian capital, Lagos instead.

Decisions were made in 23 disciplines for men and 18 for women disciplines. For women, there were no contests in the 3000 -meter steeplechase, triple jump, pole vault and hammer throw.

It was attended by 308 athletes from 27 countries participate. Hakim Toumi (ALG, hammer throw ) won for the fourth time in a row at Africa championships, as well as the Nigerian men in the 4 x 100 - meter relay. Moreover, defended their title: Azzedine Brahmi (ALG, Steeplechase ), Yusuf Alli (NGR, long jump ), Mary Onyali (NGR, 100 m), Hassiba Boulmerka (ALG, 800 m and 1500 m ), Maria Usifo (NGR, 400-meter hurdles ), Lucienne N'Da (CIV, high jump ), Hanan Ahmed Khaled (EGY, shot put ) and Yasmina Azzizi (ALG, Heptathlon ).

The most successful nation in the medal was the host country that dominated the sprint competitions. It was followed by Algeria and Kenya, which gained Medals mainly to the middle and long distances.
