2002 African Championships in Athletics

The 13th European Athletics Championships Africa took place from 6 to 10 August 2002 at the Stadium of November 7 in Radès in Tunis instead. Competitions were held in 22 disciplines for men and 21 for women disciplines. For the 3000 -meter steeplechase of the men there was no such competition for the women. A total of 417 athletes participated from 42 countries.

Many services in the sprint and long jump competitions were favored by partial strong tailwind. The most successful athletes were Frank Fredericks of Namibia (100 m, 200 m), Janus Robberts from South Africa ( shot put, discus throw ), Kaltouma Nadjina from Chad (200 m, 400 m) and Françoise Mbango Etone from Cameroon ( long jump, triple jump) with two gold medals.

With Eric Milazar (MRI, 400 m ), Djabir Saïd Guernica (ALG, 800 m ), Abderrahmane Hammad (ALG, high jump ), Younès Moudrik (MAR, long jump), Hatem Ghoula ( DO, 20 km walking), Syrine Balti (TUN, pole vault ), Monia Kari (TUN, discus throw ), Aïda Sellam (TUN, Javelin ) managed eight athletes to defend the title. In addition, the Nigerian 4 x 400 meters relay women could repeat their victory of 2000.
