1996–97 Colonial Hockey League season
The 1996/97 season was the sixth regular season of the Colonial Hockey League. The ten teams completed in the regular season per 74 encounters. The point of best team in the regular season were the Flint Generals, while the Quad City Mallards won in the play- offs for the first time the Colonial Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Detroit Falcons have been to Port Huron, Michigan, moved and changed their name to Port Huron Border Cats.
- The London Wildcats returned after one year of inactivity in the league back, have been to Dayton, Ohio, moved and changed their name to Dayton Ice Bandits.
- The Saginaw Wheels changed their name to Saginaw Lumber Kings.
- The Thunder Bay Senators changed their name to Thunder Bay Thunder Cats.
