Abydos King List

The King List of Abydos ( Seti I ) is a list of Egyptian kings in the mortuary temple of Seti I at Abydos. It lists 75 pharaohs who ruled before Seti I., this list is very selective. Many rulers of the First and all the rulers of the Second Intermediate missing.

The King List of Abydos, together with four other king lists ( Palermostein, King List of Karnak king list of Saqqara, Turin Royal Canon) represents an important source of the order of the pharaohs rule in Egypt

In the of Seti I at Abydos built temples located in a long passage the king gallery in the southern wing building a wall with reliefs of the name cartridges Egyptian pharaohs. On the left side of this " king list" of Pharaoh Seti I with his young son Ramses (later Ramesses II ) is shown, which he presented as his designated successor in the line of royal ancestors.

The cartridges include the reign of Seti I known genealogy of 76 rulers of Egypt from Menes to Seti except for the 1st and 2nd intermediate and five pharaohs of the 18th dynasty, which for state political or religious reasons ( Damnatio memoriae ) have been omitted:

  • Hatshepsut ( Maat -ka- Re), the. Himself as regent for her stepson Thutmose III for Pharaoh said, but was later extinguished as a usurper in the temples,

The King List in detail

The royal cartouches are placed in the temple in two horizontal rows. The presentation of the historical sequence of the reign of the Pharaohs starts left in the top row.

The cartridges each containing one of the five " names " (or " title "), the great royal titulary every Pharaoh, which he took at his enthronement ( throne name ) or from birth possessed (birth name). In the early dynasties, however, were not all five names available. Part of birth name is not reliably translatable according to the current state of research. The throne names that were bestowed on ascending the throne, on the other hand always include a brief statement about the sun god Re, and are formed as short sentences.

A third set of cartridges is the graphic statements, the king list. There is a frieze formed from the two cartridges Seti I, the builder of the temple, with his birth or proper names ( Sa Ra = son of Re ) and his throne name ( Nisut, also Nesut, = king).
