Aliano

Aliano is a municipality in the southern Italian province of Matera in the region of Basilicata.

96 km ² of the community Aliano now live 1063 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012). The place Aliano is situated on a steep ridge in the middle of the so-called gullies ( fold mountains ) between the valleys of the Sauro and Agri; due to the clayey subsoil, the houses are always threatened by erosion. The municipality borders the municipalities Gorgoglione and Stigliano ( Matera province ), as well as Missanello, Rocca Nova and Sant'Arcangelo ( province of Potenza).

The place was by the book Cristo si è fermato a Eboli ( " Christ stopped at Eboli ", 1945) by Carlo Levi famous, the fact of his experiences and impressions during his exile 1935/1936 in which he reasons of discretion ' Gagliano ' mentioned site describes. The book was partially filmed in 1978 by Francesco Rosi to the original locations.

In the 1990s, Aliano was proclaimed under the auspices of UNESCO Parco Letterario Carlo Levi ( " Literary Park Carlo Levi "). Today there remember a Museo Carlo Levi with photos and documents, a museum with 20 paintings Levis in the former town hall of the place as well as a multimedia show in Levis former residence of the famous exiles. In addition, the Museo della ethnographic Civiltà Contadina ( "museum of rural culture" ) shows evidence of the laborious peasant life described by Levi. In the churchyard is Levis grave to visit.

The number of inhabitants has dropped from 2,288 in 1951 to 1,284 according to the statistical data for the year 2001.
