Irsina

Irsina is a municipality in the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata.

In Irsina 5038 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The town is located 48 km west of Matera. The neighboring municipalities are Genzano di Lucania (PZ ), Grassano, Gravina in Puglia ( BA), Grottole, Oppido Lucano (PZ ), Tolve (PZ ) and Tricarico.

History

Montepeloso ( Mons Pilosus ) was the name of the place until 1895. The first mention (as Irtium ) relates to the destruction by the Saracens 988 archeology can prove a settlement from the 4th or 3rd century BC. In 1133 the city was destroyed by Roger II, but soon rebuilt. The present name is derived from Irtium that is with hirsutus ( prickly, hairy ) associated.

A bishop of Montepeloso 1059 deposed by Pope Nicholas II because of simony, then the Archbishop of Acerenza united without papal consent Montepeloso with the Diocese of Tricarico. Our own Bishop will be confirmed again in 1123 by Pope Calixtus II. After the destruction of the city by King Roger and the diocese is canceled. Efforts to re-establish at the end of the 12th century fail, spiritual direction is in the hands of the priors of the monastery of St. Mary, Roger II had the French Abbey of Chaise- Dieu assumed. Only in 1460 the diocese was erected again, initially associated with Andria, independent and reports directly to the Pope from 1479. In 1818 the diocese was united with the diocese Montepeloso Gravina.

The Abbot of St. Mary is mentioned in the Catalogus baronum as a vassal of the Count of Tricarico.

Worth seeing is the cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, but was completely remodeled in 1777. The Museo Ianora has collections of prehistoric and ancient archaeological small finds, coins of the Greek period, women's clothing of the 18th century, weapons and other historical objects. On the grounds of the Norman- Swabian castle, a convent of the Franciscans ( OFM) has emerged after 1531, but even older buildings can be seen.

Economy

The Swiss power company BKW FMB Energie plans together with the project company Energia Bradano in Irsina a gas combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 400 MW.
