Pomarico
Pomarico is a municipality in the province of Matera in southern Italy with 4207 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012 ). It belongs to the region of Basilicata. The name is " carrier Pomi " from the Latin stem, which means as much as fertile ground.

Geography
This is not a typical tourist town, more of a mountain village, where the tourism boom of recent decades passed. However, this does not diminish the idyll and charm of the small town, which is like many of its neighboring communities ( Bernalda, Ferrandina Montescaglioso, Miglionico, Pisticci ) on a ridge. At the foot of the hill the Basento, often declining sharply the water level in summer flows.
Expansion of the urban area
At the gates Pomaricos remains of a settlement dating from pre-Christian times were discovered. This settlement is " Pomarico Vecchio ", so called old Pomarico. The historic center of the current Pomarico is located about 3 km on a hill that runs up to another hill, the quarters Aldo Moro, which corresponds to a new housing estate. There is also the only industrial area.

History
The origins of the city go back to the 5th century before Christ.
Religions
The majority of the population is Roman Catholic. There is a small Protestant community that celebrates their services, curiously, in a garage. Patron saint of the city is San Michele Arcangelo, whose feast is celebrated every year on May 8. He is the largest of several churches consecrated in place.

Culture and sights
Among the attractions of the city include the various churches, the excavations of the Pomarico Vecchio and the historic city center, and the " Palazzo ". The excavations occupy the Greco- Hellenistic origin of the place.

Traffic
Pomarico is racc by car via the Strada Stadale 7. ( Via Appia ) to reach out towards Matera, Bari. Coming from Potenza to reach Pomarico on the SS 407 ( Basentana ), a newly built highway leading towards Montescaglioso and on the Ionian coast of Metaponto.
The only public bus runs every half hour ( from morning to night ) by Aldo Moro to quarters in the city center.

In the 1960s and 70s, many residents left the city to come as guest workers to Germany. In the 1980s, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake.
