Gorgoglione

Gorgoglione is a municipality in the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata.

In Gorgoglione 1019 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The place is located 100 km south-west of Matera. The neighboring municipalities are Aliano, Cirigliano, Corleto Perticara (PZ ), Guardia Perticara (PZ ), Missanello (PZ ), Pietrapertosa (PZ ) and Stigliano.

Gorgoglione originated in the Middle Ages. The inhabitants settled here in order to have protection from the Maleria and enemy attacks. The name is derived from Gurgulio which gurgle of the stream means.

Worth seeing is the Sanctuary of Madonna del Pergamo.
