Montalbano Jonico

Montalbano Jonico is a municipality in the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata.

In Montalbano Jonico 7417 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The place is 62 km south of Matera. The neighboring municipalities are Craco, Pisticci, Scanzano Jonico, Stigliano and Tursi.

The origin of the place is unknown. Probably the site was founded in the 3rd century BC. The place was named after the hill on which the town stands. The addition Jonico was added in 1963.
