Salandra

Salandra is a village in the southern Italian region of Basilicata in the province of Matera with 2887 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

The village lies on a hill above the valley of the Salandrella, a watercourse. After Matera there are in a northeasterly direction approximately 25 km to the west and to Potenza about 45 km.

History

Wall remains and findings point to a Norman origin. The lords of the castle from the 12th century were Gilberto di Salandra, then Francesco Sforza Attendolo and finally the family Revertera.

Attractions

  • From the former castle are still some walls and two arcades exist.
  • A Reformation monastery from the 17th century has a remarkable wicket and two lion sculptures in the Roman style.
  • In the Church of San Antonio is home to two polyptychs from the 17th century ( by Frater Simone from Florence) and the painter Antonio Stabile in 1580.
