Garaguso

Garaguso is a municipality in the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata.

In Garaguso 1108 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The place is 62 km west of Matera. The neighboring municipalities are Calciano, Grassano, Oliveto Lucano, Salandra and San Mauro Forte.

As early as prehistoric times, people lived here. A heyday the place at the time of Magna Graecia. The town was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt by Count Sanseverino di Tricarico. The name comes from Garaguso of marsh grass and earth wall and means as much as " hill in the swamp ."

The Archaeological area of Garaguso a small Greek temple was found. This temple is exhibited in the Museum of Potenza.
