Audi Quattro#Motorsport

The Audi Sport quattro is a sports car from Audi, which was presented in 1983 at the IAA in Frankfurt. It was developed based on the Audi quattro for rallying and produced by the end of 1984 until the summer of 1985 in a quantity of only 220 units for the required FIA homologation in Group B.

Formation

After the rally entry of Audi in 1981, the factory team with the Audi quattro was able to win the 1982 World Championship of Makes. In 1983, the World Championship drivers' title, Hannu Mikkola was followed by. But the competition has been getting stronger over time. With pure racing machines, such as the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 with mid-engine, could the rally quattro, which had been constructed based on a production car, not keep longer. So it was decided at Audi in 1983 for the construction of a new vehicle - the Sport quattro, also called " the short one" called. Although the Sport quattro quattro externally looks pretty similar, but the two have much in common except for their names not. In addition, they took for the season 1984 Walter Röhrl under contract. This should mainly do development work at Audi.

At the International Motor Show 1983, the Sport quattro was first presented to the public. In December 1984, began his extradition.

Body

In the model, Audi was able to proceed through the variety of its models in the so-called modular system. Basis of the Sport quattro is up to the B- pillar, the two-door Audi 80 sedan and from the B- pillar of the Audi quattro. The Sport quattro is 320 mm shorter than the Audi quattro. The side doors come completely from the Audi 80, the tailgate is made of fiberglass reinforced polyester resin, as it was also used for the front bumper of the Audi quattro. Fender, side panels rear, roof, hood, front and rear aprons were manufactured and supplied by the company Seger and Hoffmann in Switzerland. These parts are made of multi-layered aramid fabric, epoxy resin and various additives. The preparation and editing of this rigid but lightweight material made from a large part of the total cost of the Audi Sport quattro.

Motor

Never before were, as here, all technical possibilities to improve performance next to each other in series automobile. In addition to turbocharging already known from the Audi 200 Turbo and Audi quattro, a cylinder head with four valves per cylinder has the Audi Sport quattro used. The engine capacity was reduced from 2,144 to 2,140 liters. This was necessary in order to remain, despite the time set for turbocharged engines for the competition so-called "turbo factor " of 1.4 under 3 liters:

This was important, since vehicles with less than 3 liters were allowed to weigh according to the rules below 1000 kg. According to the function of the Audi Sport quattro as planned winning car at national and international rally tracks the overall design of the engine was designed so that for sporting use, a further increase in performance was relatively easy to achieve 450 to 500 hp.

To compensate for the extra weight of the four-valve cylinder head and larger turbocharger, the aluminum engine block was manufactured. It was also used in the Sport quattro for the first time on a turbocharged engine from Audi, a new fully electronic fuel injection system.

The engine of the Audi Sport quattro achieved an output of 225 kW ( 306 hp) and 350 Nm of torque. The five- cylinder four-valve engine with K27 turbochargers of KKK allowed a boost pressure of up to 2.04 bar.

Motorsport

From the Audi Sport quattro Although some 170 units have been sold to private individuals, yet his actual determination of the race in the World Rally Championship. Making his first appearance there he had at the Corsica Rally of 1984. Yet the Sport quattro S1 proved initially to be relatively bulky. The engine also had to deal with thermal issues, but these were resolved over time. In the Ivory Coast Rally 1984 Stig Blomqvist was piloting him through mud and dust to overall victory and thus for himself and Audi to two World Cup titles. 1985 denied the Sport quattro S1 rally his first full season. The signs of the times had however already turned against Audi. The new, pure-bred Group B racing cars of the competitors were clearly superior to that of a road car -derived Sport quattro.

However, Audi has developed a total of 20 examples of the Sport quattro S1 on. Taking full advantage of the FIA regulations for Evolution versions of the Sport quattro was fitted with wings and spoilers and was thereafter Sport Quattro E2. This spoiler awarded him both high speeds and cornering sufficient downforce. The Sport quattro E2 debuted in early July in 1985 at the Olympus Rally (then aspirant Competition for the World Rally Championship 1986) in the U.S., where Hannu Mikkola drove him to an impressive overall victory. Walter Röhrl then celebrated at the San Remo Rally in 1985 the only victory of a Sport quattro E2 at a World Championship race. After an accident in the Rally of Portugal in 1986, in which three spectators were killed and 33 were injured, Audi moved provisionally back from the World Rally Championship.

In 1987, Audi won the "short " but once again back on the track. And in the strongest ever self-built version of Audi. The Audi Sport quattro E2 Pikes Peak ought to write along with Walter Röhrl motorsport history. The vehicle was aerodynamically improved even further compared to "normal" E2. The engine got extra power. Walter Röhrl had now Audi According to 598 hp. Röhrl played with this vehicle the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado (USA). Audi won this known as the Race To The Clouds hill climb in the years 1984 ( Mouton / Pons, class victory ), 1985 ( Michèle Mouton, overall winner ) and 1986 ( Bobby Unser sen., Total victory ). But 1987 should be particularly strong competition. At the end of Walter Röhrl won with seven seconds ahead of his nearest competitor Ari Vatanen in a Peugeot 205 T16 E2, who had to fight to the finish with technical problems. Röhrl was also the first rider to beat the mountain in less than 11 minutes. 10 minutes and 47.85 seconds set a new course record dar. To date, this record of any other vehicle was offered with front engine.

Audi retired to this mountain race on gravel and a few half-hearted attempts with the Audi 200 quattro from rallying back and soon focused on to circuit racing. After the FIA had the group B "Monster" banished the end of 1986 from the World Rally Championship, took some Sport quattro S1 and E2 still several years in the Auto Sport Rallycross successfully in many races in part, for example under the Austrian Herbert Breiteneder. The most potent of them had high-powered engines, whose power was somewhere 650-700 hp for the usual here short sprint distances.
