Barweiler

Barweiler is a municipality in the district of Ahrweiler, in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Adenau. Barweiler is a nationally recognized tourist.

Geography

Barweiler is located five kilometers south-west of Adenau on the main road 258 on a sloping from east to west terrain. The residential area of the village comprises altitudes between 455 m above sea level. Sea level and 495 m above sea level. NN. To the east is adjacent to the state forest Adenau. The municipal area extends north and west to the valley of the Throws Bach, a right tributary of the Trier Bach, where it at 325 m above sea level. NN reaches its deepest point on the ground. History

Prehistoric finds

The first settlement was probably Barweilers in time to 500 BC instead, whereupon twenty tumuli found in 1930 indicate. During the construction of today's B 258 1937 foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple have been found, which has been built around the 2nd century AD. The Roman origins were also confirmed in 1954 with the discovery of a Roman well and a burial stone cist graves from the 1st century AD.

Origin of the name

The name probably comes from Barweiler baro, which is translated as " holy " and " place of sacrifice ". The reason for this name is probably in the function of pre-Christian place of worship. Previously, the origin was traced back to the Old High German village baro, meaning " bald, bare, barren " means something.

Middle Ages

The first mention of the village was 855 in a deed of gift of the Emperor Lothair I as Brunuilare. Even before 940 Barweiler had a chapel, together with the mother church in " Okyshem " ( Üxheim ) belonged to the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier. In a document of the Trier archbishop Ruotbert he appeared to place 943 as Barwilra. Pope Innocent II took on May 6, 1140, among other possessions of the abbey also Barwilre besides the church under his protection. Liber Valoris the Archdiocese of Cologne from the 14th century Barweiler is listed as belonging to the Eiffel deanery, but not referred to the place as a parish. The present parish church of St Gertrude was built in the 18th century, 1826/27 rebuilt and expanded in the 1960s.

Gorgeous country belonged originally to the county Barweiler Nürburg 1290 and came to the Electorate of Cologne. This affiliation lasted until the end of the 18th century. As part of the Electoral Cologne Office Nürburg was Barweiler a podestà. For Bailiwick Barweiler were the village communities Barweiler, Bauler Hoffeld, Müsch, Pomster, Reifferscheid, Rodder, Wiesemscheid and Throws.

After 1794

As a result of the First Coalition War came the left bank of the Rhine, thus Barweiler, 1794 under French rule. Under the French administration Barweiler 1798 was the seat of a Mairie, Barweiler belonged to the canton and arrondissement Adenau Bonn in the Rhine -Moselle department. To Mairie Barweiler included the villages Bauler Pompster and Wissem Scheid.

Due to the decisions on the Congress of Vienna the Rhineland in 1815 assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia. The community Barweiler was administered from 1816 to the mayoralty Aremberg in the then newly created circle Adenau in Koblenz Region, from 1822 to Barweiler belonged to the Rhine province. Cm September 30, 1932 the district was dissolved Adenau, Barweiler came to the district of Ahrweiler.

Since 1945 Barweiler is part of Rhineland- Palatinate then newly founded and since 1968 belongs to the municipality Adenau.

Today, the site is dominated by tourism, the local church is home to several guest houses and holiday homes.
