Biberwier

Biberwier is a municipality with 640 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Reutte, Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Reutte.

Geography

The village lies on the southern edge of the road Lermooser moss, between a mountain slope and landslide landscape of the Fern Pass in the Tyrolean Alps. The municipality is crossed by the Loisach that springs west of the town. The community is located near the border with Germany on the edge of the Wettersteingebirge and is visible from the Zugspitze.

History

The name is derived from beavers that have proven to 1800 lived in the municipality. Finds from the Roman period are evidence of the early importance of the site on the Via Claudia Augusta. The track grooves at the northern entrance are probably of later date. From the Middle Ages until 1921 was here, at the Silberleithe, the largest mining operation in Außerfern, the union Silberleithen, the degraded calamine, lead and zinc ore. Since the end of 2004 the mining trail Silberleithen opens this former mining area for tourism. The tunnel opened in 1984 Lermooser the place was relieved from traffic.

Today, with the ski resort town is an Marienbergjoch and the Lakes Blindsee Mittersee Weissensee and a two seasonal tourism community.
