Bismarckstraße (Berlin U-Bahn)

Metro Station Bismarck Street is a railway junction of the Berlin U -Bahn lines U2 and U7. It is located at the intersection Bismarck-/Wilmersdorfer street in the district of Charlottenburg and was opened on 28 April 1978. In contrast to the neighboring stations of U2, he stands out because of its contrasting architecture.

History

Due to the S-Bahn boycott after 1961 by the construction of the Wall and the closure of the tram, the metro was massively expanded in West Berlin. However, this affected only the more modern large profile network ( today's U5 to U9 ). The construction work in the low-profile power was limited to the construction of new interchanges to new subway lines. In the area of today's U2 this happened in 1978 in Charlottenburg, between the existing stations German opera and Sophie -Charlotte-Platz.

During the construction of the line 7, a tangential line, the several district centers to each other without going through the western city center of Berlin, several existing lines were crossed. These included the lines 4, 2 (now U3), and 1 (now partially U2). The junction with the latter originated in the area Bismarck-/Wilmersdorfer road, 380 meters west of the station German opera. Despite the short distance, a new interchange station was built to provide the required transfer possibility. The 380 meters distant neighbor station remained still exist. At the beginning of the construction work was first on May 2, 1970, the branch line of the German Opera on Richard -Wagner-Platz, at the time referred to as Line 5, closed down. This connection took over after its completion, the new line 7

Since that time already 70 years old tunnel of the former Line 1 consisted only of weak reinforced concrete and the BVG then had no experience with this type of construction, let them tear down the whole structure and built it again from a completely closed reinforced concrete frame. After a subway station could be run as Tower Station, the two platforms were situated exactly above each other at right angles. The line 7 received a 110 meter long and 11.6 meter wide platform for the small line profile, however, were two uncomfortable side platforms, each of which was 4.5 meters wide, built. For the construction of a center platform, the tracks were pulled apart and the line for a long time must be shut down, after which the transport companies were to stop. Nevertheless, the low-profile station will become one well in the line one, because most of the other stations have side platforms. As the name of the new station chose the Senate Transport Administration Bismarck Street. This created a little curious, because until 1961, the further eastern railway station lying German opera had this name, and carried him to 1978 as suffix.

The design of the two platforms took over, as was customary, the architect Rainer G. Rümmler. The lower part of the station where the trains of line U7, he let SHapINg with aluminum plates, the platform walls were white metal sheets. As a contrast, the held station in black plate is used. The low-profile platform dominate the colors green and yellow, also serves the red shield and the train station where the color red seating as contrast. The extension of line 7 and the tower station on the Bismarck road went into operation on 28 April 1978.

Since May 1990, the station has elevators to facilitate passengers with prams and wheelchair transfers between lines. Both in the time since the opening to the lift installation, and then the station has not changed significantly. However, since 1993 no longer runs the U1 line to the Silesian gate at the top platform, now here runs the U2 to Pankow.

From summer 2009 until early 2010, parts of the station renovation. Some wall parts and lamps were here renewed. At the level of U2, the wall between the tracks was provided with the representation of a jungle landscape. On the platform the U7 the floor were completely renewed and built for the visually impaired. This was previously black, after the renovation it is tiled light gray, according to the concept of LPP to increasingly use light soils.

Despite the elevators of the train station is not wheelchair accessible, so lacking yet the usual aids for the blind on the platforms on the U2 line.

For 2013, the BVG was planning a major overhaul of the station. For around 12.8 million euros, inter alia, the stairways, lobbies, elevators and escalators are to be renewed.

Connection

The underground station is operated exclusively by the lines U2 and U7 subway. A direct transit traffic to other lines of public transport does not exist.
