Breitenbach am Herzberg ( officially Breitenbach a Herzberg ) is a municipality in eastern Hesse in the extreme southwest of the district Hersfeld -Rotenburg in Germany.

Geography

Geographical location

The community is located at the foot of Mount Deer ( he is often also called Herzberg ) and the Rimberg in southern Knüllgebirge. The districts are distributed among the lower Jossatal and its side valleys.

The district municipality has its lowest point at the Jossa in the district Oberjossa 234 m above sea level. NN. The highest point is 529 m above sea level. NN on the slopes of Rimberges.

The community is located between Alsfeld ( about 18 km to the west ) and Bad Hersfeld ( some 20 km to the northeast ).

Neighboring communities

Breitenbach is bordered to the north by the municipalities Ottrau and Upper Hall (both in the Schwalm -Eder -Kreis), to the east by the municipalities of Kirchheim and low- Aula (both in Hersfeld -Rotenburg ), to the south by the towns slot and Grebenau and to the west by the Alsfeld (all three in Vogelsberg ).

History

The oldest written mention of the village Breydenbach apud stratam the bi Herzisberg dated 1290th This document refers to even older documents. It is thus believed that the villages have already been created between 400 and 800.

From 1290 to 1298 the Herzberg Castle on the trade route " Short Hesse " by Heinrich von Romrod was built. Heinrich received the area around the village as a fief of the Landgrave of Hessen. In 1372 and 1373 the castle of Frederick Herzberg was a major stronghold of the Knights of the Federal Sterner, who fought in the last quarter of the 14th century against the increasing power of the Landgrave of Hessen. Over several hundred years later, the Barons of Dörnberg held the castle and later a land fortress Herzberg.

During the time of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (1807-1813) was Breitenbach Breitenbach and capital of the canton seat of the peace court.

Incorporations

With effect from 31 December 1971, the municipalities of Breitenbach am Herzberg, Hatterode and Oberjossa voluntarily joined together and formed the new United Breitenbach am Herzberg. Gehau and Powerless came in the course of municipal reform added on August 1, 1972.

Mayor

Volker Jaritz was elected in the runoff election on 10 February 2008, a vote share of 65.5 % to the mayor. Its predecessor was Siegfried Steube ( FWG ), who was elected on January 27, 2002 with a vote share of 71.7 %. Previously, Paul had Orth (SPD ) held the office. He was elected on March 3, 1996 with a vote share of 70.8 %.

Coat of arms

Blazon: "A nine times out of silver and blue diagonally left corrugated beams. Previously, a gold and red diagonally right split -winning crenellated tower with a six -pointed star in confused colors of the tower. "

Meaning: The Tower stands for the Burg Herzberg. The star on the tower is reminiscent of the Knight Alliance of Sterner, who had a base meant at the castle. The colors of gold and red are from the coat of arms of the Barons of Dörnberg who are in possession of the castle since 1477.

The flag was approved on November 10, 1988 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior.
