Cairate

Cairate is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 7863 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Varese, in the Lombardy region. The municipality is situated approximately 14 km south-southeast of Varese, at the confluence of Tenore and Olona. Cairate is immediately adjacent to the province of Como.

History

During the rule of the Lombards, the fortifications were built in Cairate. Until 1287 the town was under the rule of Seprio, today Castelseprio. By 1287, the Dukes of Milan acquired ( the Visconti ) the control of the area.

Traffic

The former railway line of Valmoreabahn Castellanza to Mendrisio (Ticino, Switzerland ) was 1928/1977 closed. Parts of the track have been reopened. But this already ends in Malnate. A reopening to Cairate is not planned.
