Geography

The town is located approximately every 30 km from Milan and Bergamo to the Adda and was a strategically important point for crossing the river. The municipality consists of the two districts Groppello d' Adda and Cascine S. Pietro.

The place is famous for two battles: the Battle of Cassano on August 16, 1705 between the Austrians under Prince Eugene, and the French under Vendôme ( the only battle which did not win Prinz Eugen ), and the battle of the Adda on 27 April 1799 between the Austrians and Russians under Suvorov and the French under Moreau, who had to leave to this, the Lombardy.

The town's economy was initially dominated by agriculture, since the 19th century was here Linificio Canapificio Nazionale, a large spinning resident.
