ÄŒelinac

Čelinac ( Serbian Cyrillic Челинац ) is a small city in the Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina and capital of the municipality of the same name.

Geography

Čelinac lies in the valley of the Vrbanja about 12 km southeast of Banja Luka. The 362 km ² large municipality is forested mountainous and. From the lowest point at the mouth of Josavka in the Vrbanja the terrain ( Uzlomac Mountains ) rises in the south to 759 m.

Neighboring municipalities are Banja Luka, Kneževo, Kotor Varos, Laktaši, Prnjavor and Teslić.

History

The municipal area there are some remains of Illyrian settlements. The main town Čelinac developed end of the 16th century.

Population

At the time of the 1991 census the municipality had 18,713 inhabitants Čelinac, of which 16,554 ( 88.5 %) than Serbs, 1,446 (7.7%) than Bosniaks, 377 (2.0%) Yugoslavs and 76 ( 0.4 %) designated as Croats.

In the capital lived 4,857 people, including 3,450 ( 71.0 %) Serbs, 1,005 ( 20.7 %), Bosniaks, 234 (4.8%) Yugoslavs and 51 (1.1%) Croats.

The municipality covers a total of 30 locations that are aggregated into 17 local communities ( mjesne zajednice ): Balt, Bašići, Branesci Donji, Branesci Gornji, Brezicani, Crni Vrh, Čelinac, Čelinac Gornji, Dubrava Nova, Dubrava Stara, Grabovac, Josavka Donja, Josavka Gornja, Kablovi, Kamenica, Lađevci, Lipovac Markovac, Mehovci, Memici, Miloševo, Opsječko, Popovac Skatavica, Šahinovići, Šnjegotina Donja, Šnjegotina Srednja, Šnjegotina Velika, Štrbe and Vijacani Gornji.

Sons and daughters of the town

The former politician and convicted war criminals Radoslav Brđanin was born on 9 February 1948 in Čelinac.

Traffic

In the Valley of Vrbanja runs the main road M4 ( Banja Luka -Doboj Teslić ). The railway line Banja Luka -Doboj crosses the area from west to east direction.
