Centro Region, Portugal

The Centro ( Central Region ) is a region of Portugal. It includes the districts of Coimbra and Castelo Branco entirely, to the majority of the districts of Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda, the northern part of the district of Lisbon, three-quarters of the district of Leiria and a circle in the district of Santarém.

Neighboring regions are Região Norte in the north, Região de Lisboa and Alentejo in the south. In the east the region borders Spain to the west lies the Atlantic Ocean.

The area covers 23,668 km ² with 26.51 % of the Portuguese mainland. The region has a population of 1,829,544 (as of 2010, 17.87 % of mainland Portugal).

Economy

Expressed in comparison with the EU GDP in purchasing power standards the Centro region reached an index of 61.3 (EU -25: 100 ) (2003 ). The unemployment rate in 2005 was 5.2%.
