Chandrapur district

The district Chandrapur (formerly Chanda; Marathi: चंद्रपूर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The city of Chandrapur is the administrative center of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 2,204,307 people.

History

From pre-Christian times to the year 1345, the area was - as the whole region - ruled by various Buddhist and Hindu rulers. The first known state was the Mauryan Empire, the last non-Muslim dynasty were the Gond. After decades of military conflict with Muslim rulers in northern India took place in 1345 occupation by Muslim soldiers. After that prevailed until the year 1724 various Muslim dynasties ( Sultanate of Delhi, Bahmani, Deccan sultanates and the Mughals Gross ). In 1739 the area known as Nagpur Kingdom as part of the Hindu Marathenreichs became independent. After the defeat of the Marathas against the British was in 1818 as an independent state part of the British Empire. After the last ruler of the kingdom was passed in 1853, it came to the annexation of the Kingdom of Nagpur in the British Administrative Region Central Provinces ( Central Provinces and Berar since 1903 ). With the independence of India in 1947 and the reorganization of the country in 1950 was part of the new state of Madhya Pradesh. In 1956, the Indian state was divided and the area came to Bombay State. This state was also dissolved in 1960 and the district Chanda part of the new Indian state of Maharashtra. In 1964 the district received its present name Chandrapur. On August 26, 1982, a part of the district was separated, forming the new district Gadchiroli.

Population

At the last census 2011 2.204.307 inhabitants were counted. Of these, 1,123,834 were men ( 50.98 percent) and 1,080,473 women. Among the Dalits were 2011 348.365 ( 15.8 percent), the Adivasi 389 441 ( 17.7 per cent ) people. Of the total number of inhabitants lived 2011 775.378 persons ( 35.18 percent) in urban areas. Thus lived more than two-thirds of the population in the country. The majority of the population of the district of Chandrapur speaks Marathi. In the whole district there are 1,472 inhabited villages.

As everywhere in India is growing, the population in the district Chandrapur decades strongly. The increase has, however, slowed in the years 2001-2011 and was only a little over 6 percent ( 6.43 %). Strongest town inhabitants of the district is the capital Chandrapur. Other important cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Ballarpur, Bhadravati, Warora, Brahmapuri, Ghugus and Rajura.
