Ratnagiri district

Ratnagiri (District) ( Marathi: रत्नागिरी जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The city is the capital of the eponymous Ratnagiri district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 1,615,069 people.

Population

The urban population accounts for only 16.33 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. In terms of figures significant minorities are the Muslims and Buddhists. In 2001, of 1,696,777 inhabitants, 1,391,137 Hindus ( 81.99 percent), 175 672 Muslims ( 10.35 percent) and 120,855 Buddhists (7.12 percent).

Strongest town inhabitants of the district is Ratnagiri with over 70,000 residents. Other important cities with a population of more than 10,000 people are Chiplun, Khed, Lanja, Kherdi, Rajapur and Dapoli Camp.
