Solapur district

The district Solapur ( Marathi: सोलापूर जिल्हा ) is one of 35 districts in the state of Maharashtra in India. The city of Solapur ( Sholapur ) is the administrative center of the district. The last census in 2011 showed a total population of 4,317,756 people.

Population

The urban population accounts for only 32.40 percent of the total population. A clear vast majority of the population are Hindus. Smaller minorities are the Muslims, Jains and Buddhists. In 2001, of 3,849,543 inhabitants, 3,386,955 Hindus ( 87.98 per cent), Muslims 377 579 ( 9.81 per cent), Buddhists 38 497 (1.00 percent) and 27,904 Jains (0.72 percent).

Significant places

Strongest town inhabitants of the district is Solapur ( Sholapur ) with nearly 900,000 residents. Other important cities with a population of more than 25,000 people are Barshi, Pandharpur, Akkalkot and Sangole.
