Chenega [ tʃɪnigə ] is mainly inhabited by Indians of the Alutiiq language family census-designated place (CDP ) in the Valdez - Cordova Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. Chenega is on Evans Iceland in Prince William Sound.

History

The CDP consists of the village of Chenega Bay, which was created as a replacement for the destroyed by a Good Friday quake triggered by the March 1964 tsunami original village of Chenega Iceland. After the quake, in which one-third of the then 68 inhabitants of the original village were killed, subjected to some of the survivors in a refugee camp, other towns in the area. In 1982, a family moved to Iceland to Evans and 1984-1991 followed 26 more families to the place which is now called Chenega Bay.

25 years after the earthquake, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez in Prince William Sound ran aground and caused an oil spill that took Chenega also affected.

The place is connected to the ferry system of the Alaska Marine Highway.
